Let me preface this by saying im not a writer- i'm just a simple man that has a major addiction- yes Fly Fishing- I have been in New Mexico for over 11 years and i try to fish around 20 days a year-I have been out with some of the best guides in the state and learn more and more each year- in upcoming blogs i will share past trips with pictures and future trips to come-
Three weeks ago i was on the San Juan river with my buddy Tyler- We floated the river but this time we got out to fish the good holes instead of just floating the whole time. This was magic, i had a 15+ fish day and so did Tyler. I used my brand new Winston vapor 3wt- yes way to lite for the San Juan but it was a new rod so i had to try it- Bisquit rock was my hole- I think i pulled about 8 fish in two hours and had 3 break me off. I was using rio flurocarbon 6x. 6x and a 3wt make a 16 inch fish feel like a 30 inch fish. When we looked at our waders the midges where hatching- the key was a 24 inch black midge pattern.
We only fished one more hole before the flats in fast water. we got there around 1pm which is usually a good time for some hatches to start. My buddy fished the fast water and pulled out 7 browns in 40 minutes. My luck was not that good until he gave me the magic fly ( if i tell you he may kill me). I hooked into a 22 inch brown but thanks to the two older anglers that moved into our spot i ran past their lines and he broker off- They politely told me (man that was a huge fish)- ya thanks deuche bags for hanging so close- Still a great afternoon- All in all we left early because we where tired of casting and catching fish.
I have put my time in to learn the San Juan. If you have never fished it hire a guide it will save you alot or frustration and make you love the sport- nothing like a pod of 16 inch+ rainbow trout feeding at your feet and not taking anything you throw at them- in later post i will share some common riggings for the river but you cant beat a good guide they are worth every penny your first few trips- I highly recommend Rick hooley at rocky mountain anglers- He is professional and a fun guy to fish with and he wont rush you down the river-
Tight lines and micro midges
